- What it is
- The fluid-filled space between the back of the cornea and the front of the iris and lens, filled with clear aqueous humour made by the ciliary body.
- Function
- Aqueous humour nourishes the lens and cornea and maintains the intraocular pressure (10-21 mmHg).
- Size
- About 3 mm deep centrally, volume ~0.25 ml; aqueous is replaced roughly every 100 minutes.
- Clinical note
- If drainage at the angle is blocked, pressure rises (glaucoma) and slowly damages the optic nerve; a shallow chamber predisposes to acute angle-closure.
