Shown on the female body.
- What it is
- The subcutaneous and retromammary fat that makes up most of the volume of the non-lactating breast, divided by suspensory (Cooper) ligaments.
- Function
- Gives the breast its shape and cushions the glandular tissue.
- Size
- Majority of breast volume (typically 200–500 ml per breast)
- Clinical note
- Cooper ligament shortening by a tumour dimples the overlying skin — a warning sign on examination.
