- What it is
- Fan-shaped muscle filling the iliac fossa on the inner surface of the ilium; its fibres converge onto the lateral side of the psoas tendon and insert with it on the lesser trochanter of the femur (together: iliopsoas).
- Function
- Flexes the hip and steadies the pelvis on the femur.
- Size
- About 15 cm long; fan ~10 cm wide.
- Clinical note
- Bleeding into it (in haemophilia or on anticoagulants) can compress the femoral nerve, weakening the thigh.
