Dermis (magnified skin block)
Dermis (corium)
Integumentary (skin)SkinLeg
- What it is
- The tough connective-tissue layer under the epidermis: a thin papillary layer of loose tissue in the dermal papillae over a thick reticular layer of dense collagen and elastic fibres. It holds the vessels, nerves, hair follicles and glands (shown translucent here).
- Function
- Gives skin its strength and elasticity, nourishes the epidermis and houses its appendages and sensory receptors.
- Size
- Real thickness ~0.6 mm (eyelids) to ~3–4 mm (back)
- Clinical note
- Leather is tanned dermis. Stretch marks (striae) are tears in the dermal collagen; a burn is "full thickness" once the whole dermis is destroyed.
