- What it is
- A thin fibrous sheath enveloping the globe from the optic nerve to just behind the limbus, separated from the sclera by the episcleral space and pierced by the tendons of the eye muscles.
- Function
- Forms a socket in which the eye rotates smoothly, and gives rise to check ligaments and the suspensory ligament of Lockwood.
- Size
- About 0.5-1 mm thick; fuses with the conjunctiva ~1.5 mm behind the limbus.
- Clinical note
- Anaesthetic injected into the space beneath it (sub-Tenon block) numbs the eye for cataract surgery.
