Bowman's capsule (magnified)
Capsula glomerularis
UrinaryOrgansWhole body
- What it is
- Double-walled cup around the glomerulus: an inner layer of podocytes clasping the capillaries and an outer parietal layer, with the urinary space between. Glomerulus plus capsule form the renal corpuscle.
- Function
- Collects the glomerular filtrate and channels it into the proximal tubule at the urinary pole.
- Size
- About 0.2 mm across.
- Clinical note
- In crescentic glomerulonephritis cells proliferate inside the capsule and form crescents that crush the glomerulus.
