What it is
Large grinding tooth with four cusps around a central fossa and two roots (mesial and distal). The crown is covered with enamel, the hardest substance in the body.
Function
Grinds food into a paste during chewing.
Size
Crown ≈ 10.5 × 10.0 mm, 7.0 mm tall; root ≈ 13 mm
Clinical note
The second molar erupts at about 12 years.
