- Large grinding tooth with four cusps around a central fossa and three roots (two buccal, one palatal). The crown is covered with enamel, the hardest substance in the body.
- Function
- Grinds food into a paste during chewing.
- Size
- Crown ≈ 8.5 × 10.0 mm, 6.5 mm tall; root ≈ 11 mm
- Clinical note
- The wisdom tooth erupts at 17–25 years, if at all, and is often impacted.
