What it is
The C-shaped CSF cavity inside each hemisphere: an anterior (frontal) horn, a body under the corpus callosum, the atrium, a posterior (occipital) horn and an inferior (temporal) horn curving down and forward into the temporal lobe.
Function
Its choroid plexus makes most of the cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions the brain, carries away wastes and buoys the brain so it effectively weighs only ~50 g.
Size
About 7-10 ml each; body 1-1.5 cm wide
Clinical note
It drains through the interventricular foramen (of Monro) into the third ventricle; blockage there enlarges it (obstructive hydrocephalus).
