Right ventricle
Ventriculus dexter
CardiovascularOrgansThorax
- What it is
- The crescent-shaped chamber that forms most of the front (sternocostal) surface of the heart, wrapped around the left ventricle. It narrows upward into the smooth conus arteriosus (infundibulum) that leads to the pulmonary valve.
- Function
- Pumps deoxygenated blood through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary trunk and the lungs.
- Size
- Wall 3–5 mm thick; volume similar to the left ventricle; systolic pressure only ~25 mmHg.
- Clinical note
- Its inner wall is ridged by trabeculae carneae; the septomarginal trabecula (moderator band) carries the right bundle branch to the anterior papillary muscle.
