Tricuspid valve
Valva atrioventricularis dextra (valva tricuspidalis)
CardiovascularOrgansThorax
- What it is
- The right atrioventricular valve, with anterior, posterior and septal leaflets anchored by chordae tendineae to the papillary muscles of the right ventricle.
- Function
- Allows blood to pass from the right atrium to the right ventricle and closes in systole to prevent regurgitation into the right atrium and veins.
- Size
- Largest valve: annulus ~3.5–4 cm diameter (circumference 11–13 cm); opening area 5–8 cm².
- Clinical note
- Closure of the mitral and tricuspid valves makes the first heart sound (S1); tricuspid endocarditis is typical in people who inject drugs.
